May 02 "That Wall Sure Is Great..."Hello family, friends & everyone else!
I know it's been a long while since I've posted (almost 2 months) but I've been quite busy. The school year is winding down but before the end sometime near the end of June, everyone here in China gets May 1-7 off. On the first day off, I went on a tour bus trip to the Great Wall with my teacher friend Michael and my roommate Dr. Neil. It was a good time and as Richard Nixson so famously said "It sure is a great wall" (well famous here anyway.
Life has been good here and I'm currently weighing options but am pretty sure I'll be staying in China for at least another year. Ok Enough about me... Here's what you all Really want....
The Pictures...
March 07 Where's the Rice?Today, at the restaurant on campus here, I decided to order Kung Pao Chicken. To my surprise, they were out of rice! how the f. does a restaurant run out of rice? It's like McDonald's without the fries or Pizza w/o the cheese.
Wow. If you look hard enough, you really can see anything happen.
Oh, and my computer crashed so I had to buy a new hard drive...oh well, comme ci,comme ca!
February 24 Back Home In ChinaWell, I'm back home (sorry for the lateness of the post) and feeling good. The visit was good and I am happy to have been able to visit my family and get to Utah to see Angie, Dave and the kids. Utah is a beautiful state. The first week of the second term has ended here and starting next week my schedule changes. I am teaching 2 reading classes (Level 3) and one level 3 writing class. It's quite an easy schedule and while I originally was gonna have all my classes be done by noon every day the new schedule allows me to get all grading done during day (most grading for writing).
I have included some pictures from my trip to the states :) I'm determined over the next 5 months to take more and more pictures of beijing and wherever else I may go, because I realized while back in the USA that I didn't take many pictures.
February 05 Home for the Holidays (China Style)Hello friends, family and others!
Instead of spending Chinese New Year in Beijing or traveling around China, I called my father up on January 14th to see if the prospect of me coming back to Seattle would be a good idea. He said, sure, why not and $1,000 later, I was in Seattle that following Wednesday (the 16th). I return to Beinjing Feb 14th.
I've had a good time. Went to a party to watch the Seahawks (USA Football team) win to go to the Super Bowl (Conference Championship). It was a good time. I went to stores to look around and get a few things that are hard to find in Beijing, like "good fitting" blue jeans. The following weekend my Dad, my two nephews and I went to the Seahawks Super Bowl Send-off and had a wonderful time. From there we went to the Mariners Fan Fest and got to go to many places fans normally can't go.
Tomorrow is Super Bowl XL and I will attend it at the normal place we go to every year here in Washington, Roger Hart's should be a good time.
I'll write more and share more picutes later... Cheers.
December 22 Pavarotti and Christmas...Hello all,
I had written a whole long-winded message for y'all to read but unfortunately it got deleated somehow. So I've decided to share, with you, the abridged version. On Saturday December 10th, I went to Luciano Pavarotti's concert here in Beijing. While the music isn't my normal "cup of tea," it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see someone as famous as Pavarotti. He's retiring so the chance wouldn't come up again. I went with a couple of friends and the show was pretty good. I took some pictures but they didn't come out that well so I'll post one of my friend's better pictures when they get around to sending them to me.
Chirstmas is in full swing here. Yes, there's decorations everywhere. we even are having a Christmas party tonight for all teachers/staff that wish to go. We're doing a gift game like my family does every year...Pick a number, lowest goes first, largest goes last. pick from unwrapped gifts or take from other person. It's always fun. That'll probably be the extent of my Christmas celebration though. I have a stack of cards to send out and they're on their way out tonight. Those recieving them will get them late but you'll still get them!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday season and a Happy Newe Year!
Cheers. November 25 Turkey DayHappy Thanksgiving Day. Let the shopping hysteria begin! It's friday and I'm working, yet again. Only this time it isn't reatail related. Since I started working at Wal-Mart in 1997, I worked all but TWO (2001, 2002) Black Fridays. I've passed that baton on to Angie, my sister who's happily working for Target these days. I do have to say that I do have fond memories for black friday. Particulary the ones from 2000 and 2004. Mainly because I worked the morning shifts of those to see the craziness that is a Wal-Mart 530AM rush and then saw the "organized chaos" that was the 3 hour waiting lines to check-out at Best Buy last year. Fun, Fun, Fun. The only reason those days are "great" is that they go by fast. For Thanksgiving dinner, 12 staff people here went to Paul's "Steak & Eggs" and had Turkey that he imported from the USA (It is the only continent that Turkey is native to). We also had stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, salad, veggies and of course the pumpkin pie. It was yummy and I won't eat much today because of it. I hope everyone reading this has/had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. And remember, no product or bargain is worth getting hurt or up at 2 am for! November 18 8,000 Songs In 22 Days and other stuffThere are some things that I’ve learned in my three months here and most of it stems from the fact that we’re only as happy as we allow ourselves to be. Since I’m rather happy, happier than I’ve been in a long time, I feel quite good. This could be from the fact that I’ve lost around 50 pounds of weight since I’ve been here or the fact that I am more true to myself than anytime in my life. For too long I lived my life “for others.” This isn’t to say that anyone
in my family that reads this should feel guilty about my “living for
others.” This is something that many
people do. Be it a child who doesn’t
want to disappoint their parents or a mother who (should) live to make sure
their children are raised properly.
There are also many who live their life to gain approval from
others. That’s something that can take a
lifetime to overcome and thankfully, It took me moving to Beijing
to understand that I need to live for
me.
Not anyone else. And, now, I do. I guess living here, literally half-way around the world,
away from family was a bold step to personal independence. I cannot believe I was (on some level) afraid
of moving out on my own. It really is
something we all must do. It just took
me almost 27 years to do it. I also am
happy because I am working at a job that is quite rewarding. Though there are times of tediousness, it’s
not as if most jobs don’t have such problems. Being a teacher, even if it’s
only for this year, is something that is an experience of a lifetime. Onto some other news.
I am now officially an owner of an iPod.
While I was completely against
the iPod before I came to China,
I decided that Apple’s product is one of the most refined, well-thought out,
products on the market. It’s so easy to
use that even a “dummy” would be able to use it quite effortlessly. It’s a gadget that is worth
investigating. Now, nobody needs to
really get the 60 GB (gigabyte) one that I bought here, for a price about 50$
more than USA prices, but even the new 1-5gb “iPod Nano” audio players are
worth investigating. Don’t be afraid of
“sticker shock.” They are definitely
worth the price. I bought my big iPod
because, well, I am a huge music fan (as if anyone
who knows me needs for me to say it again) and I cluttered up my 60GB laptop
with 30 GB of music. Wow. That’s about 8,000 songs. It’d take me 22 days to play each
song once. Midterms in school are over and most of my students did
quite well. It took me 7 hours Wednesday
at a café to grade them and average out my student’s midterm grade
reports. But I know me, if I hadn’t done
it Wednesday I’d have waited until the last minute to get stuff done. It allowed me to have a 4 day weekend with
absolutely nothing to prepare for (except for about 1 hour or so to get stuff
together for oral English. That class
had lower grades than I had hoped for so I have had to devise a different way
to teach better. So I’ll start with some
common, everyday, words and situations and go from there. Less reliance on the book should help. I’ll try to get around and take some more pictures one of these days. I haven’t religiously been taking my camera around like I normally do (for instance yesterday and today). So, until I post again, that’s all folks! |
